There are also regular shuttle buses, which run between the airport, Alghero and other prominent Sardinian cities, and a rank of taxis are waiting outside the terminal building to whisk passengers into the city and beyond.

Alghero Airport (AHO) Information: History and Facilities
Founded during the Second World War, Alghero Airport has grown steadily over the years and gradually expanded according to demand. By the late 1960s, a large terminal building was in place and soon after, the runway was extended to meet the demands of larger aircraft, measuring some 3,000 metres / 9,842 feet.

Military activities were present within the grounds of Alghero Airport until the 1980s, when the airport started to operate solely civilian flights. A decline in passenger numbers in the 1990s was blamed on Sardinia's general tourist industry at the time, with much investment needed in surrounding areas. However, by 2000, Sardinia's Alghero Airport (AHO) moved forward and began seriously planning for the future. Recently, a new terminal building has ensured that the airport has found its place in the 21st century.

Shopping is available for those looking for locally produced souvenirs, handicrafts and alcohol, with the main stores include Ichnos and Alta Marea. A duty-free outlet can also be found within in the Departures Lounge. Although the terminal has limited facilities, passengers will find all the basic amenities required, such as ATMs, a bank and currency exchange. A pharmacy is on hand to provide last-minute essentials and a range of food and drink can be purchased at the terminal's café, restaurant and bar, while tasty Sardinian snacks are available at the Kokkos shop.

Alghero Airport (AHO) Information: About Alghero Tourism
The pleasant seaside town of Alghero, the tourist capital of the Coral Riviera, sits on the northern part of Sardinia's west coast. Founded early in the 12th century, Alghero is surrounded by pine forests, vineyards and orchards. The town's Spanish heritage can be seen in many of its buildings including the beautiful church of San Francesco and the towers and bastions which remain from the old Spanish fortifications.

Tourists arriving at Alghero Airport (AHO) always visit the city's Old Town, with its narrow cobbled streets, named in both Italian and Catalan, and packed with restaurants, bars and boutique shops, particularly around the Via Carlo Alberto. The area's grottoes and caves attract adventurous visitors, who come to explore. Fishing boats and yachts float in the colourful harbour, where the crystalline sea is perfect for coral and lobster fishing. Alghero's Museo Diocesano is worth a visit and located on the Piazza Duomo.
